茶筅 read as chasen, is a bamboo whisk usually made by hand by highly skilled artisans used to wisk matcha green tea powder. While other tools could be used to whisk the matcha (and other tea powders) using a chasen offers the best results.
In Japan, is an essential tool in the 茶の湯 chanoyu or tea ceremony. There are two prominent tea schools 裏千家 Urasenke and 表千家 Omotesenke. While Urasenke uses chasen made out of gold bamboo, Omotesenke uses chasen made out of purple bamboo. Both schools were created by descendants of Sen no Rikyu.
The chasen might look intimidating at first yet is super easy to use and it helps a great deal to correctly whisk the matcha without leaving any lumps.

These are our recommendations to take care of this matcha tea whisk (chasen):
First use: Before first use, let it set in warm water for a few minutes. Dampen it before every use to prevent damaging the strings while whisking.
Handling: Handle with utmost care, do not bend the tines, they might break.
Washing: By hand, whisk some warm water to remove the remaining matcha after having finished the brewing, no soap. Rinse out with warm water, shake several times until almost all the water is removed. Place it in a chasen holder or kusenaoshi so it keeps its shape. Avoid the chasen matcha tea whisk to get damp. Do not wash in the dishwasher.
Storing: Store in a dry place.
